Guest Scholar

Dr. WALEAD M. MOSAAD, serving as the Chair and Resident Scholar at Sabeel Community, is a scholar of the Islamic tradition. He received his PhD from the University of Exeter in the UK in Arab and Islamic Studies, and was also classically trained at the Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He is also a visiting professor at the Bayan Claremont College of Theology. He has traveled extensively throughout the Muslim world, as well as Europe and the Far East, delivering lectures on various topics of interest, including Muslims as minorities, interfaith understanding, and the importance of purification and spirituality in addressing the human condition.

July 9

Day 1: Depart from NYC

  • Flight from New York to Guangzhou.

July 10

Day 2: Guangzhou

  • Welcome to China! Our team will greet you at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

  • Hotel check-in followed by city sightseeing.

Accommodation: 4 Star Hotel

Meals: Dinner

July 11

Day 3: Guangzhou - Lanzhou

  • Huaisheng Mosque, believed to be the first mosque in China, built by Sa’ad Ibn Abi Waqqas more than 1300 years ago.

  • Xianxian Mosque, constructed around the tomb of Sa’ad Ibn Abi Waqqas and other sahaba.

  • City tour of Guangzhou including visit with the local Muslim community—Xiaobei Road in Yuexiu District.

  • Fly to Lanzhou.

July 12

Day 4: Lanzhou

  • Jummah Prayer at Lanzhou Xiguan Mosque. The Xiguan Mosque was first built in the Wanli Period, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The existing constructions were rebuilt in 1990.

  • Zhengning Road Night Market visit. Travelers will be on their own for dinner on this day.

Day 5: Lanzhou

  • Visit the four Gongbeis (Islamic shrines) in the Small West Lake area: the Xiping Gongbei, the Haimen Gongbei, the Baotang Gongbei and the Yeman Gongbei.

  • City tour of Lanzhou.

  • Lanzhou Water Mosque visit.

July 14

Day 6: Lanzhou - Linxia

  • Travel to Linxia, China’s "Little Mecca."

  • “Eight Mosques and Thirteen Lanes” area. Travelers will be on their own for dinner on this day.

July 15

Day 7: Linxia- Lanzhou

  • Linxia Great Gongbei, shrine complex for the founder of the Qadiriyyah school, Qi Jingyi.

  • Huasi Gongbei, built around the tomb of Ma Laichi who brought the Khufiyya school to China and founded the Huasi Menhuan, the earliest and most important Naqshbandi order in Chinese Muslim history.

  • Linxia city tour.

  • Travel back to Lanzhou.

July 16

Day 8: Lanzhou - Xi'An

  • Bullet train to Xi’an.

  • Lunch followed by Bell Tower, Drum Tower and the Ancient City Wall visit.

Day 9: Xi'An

  • ​Visit to the Muslim Quarter to trace back China’s Islamic history and observe the local Muslim’s life.

  • Mosques in the Muslim Quarter that we will visit include the Great Mosque of Xi’an, the Dapi Lane Mosque, the Xiaopi Lane Mosque, the Daxuexi Lane Mosque, the Xiaoxuexi Lane, the North Guangji Street Mosque and the Sajin Bridge Mosque.

  • Visit with an Arabic calligrapher.

  • Visit the An's Mansion, a UNESCO site for best reserved Hui Style Architecture.

  • Travelers will be on their own for lunch and dinner on this day in the Muslim Quarter.

Day 10: Xi'An

  • Terra Cotta Army tour.

  • Visit Tang Paradise, a royal garden style theme park in China.

Excellent question. You can bring anything you like. Our suggestion is suitable clothes (temperature tends to vary in different cities). You must bring your cell phone, pairs of walking shoes, etc.

What is the Cancellation Policy for my trip?

The following is our Cancellation Policy for the China Trip:

  • At least sixty (60) days before the scheduled departure date: $1750 per person cancellation fee.

  • Less than thirty (30) days before the scheduled departure date: no-refund will be provided.

What is the deadline to register for the trip?

The deadline to register for the trip is June 21,2019 and you must have paid the full amount for the trip by this time.

Can I bring my kids on the trip and is there an age limit?

Yes, you can bring your kids on the trip and there is no age limit.

Can I join the trip if I live outside of United States?

What currency should I bring?

  • You can bring both US Dollars and Chinese Yuan with you. Most hotels will provide currency exchange services.

  • You can use your US Debit Card to withdraw Chinese Yuan from most ATMs.

 Are credit cards acceptable?

  • International credit cards are only accepted at major retail stores.

  • Smaller merchants prefers payment via digital currency app such as AliPay and WeChat Pay. 

  • Some merchants will accept Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Is it safe to travel in China?

As in any case of traveling abroad, one must practice extra precaution with personal belongings. We advise to either leave valuables in a safety deposit box in the hotel room or to keep them with you at all times. We recommend minimizing valuables you bring. We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
